Art on the Fence

August 10 was a beautiful, sunny, albeit breezy day for the Jay Summer Fest in the center of Jay, Vermont. The Wooden Horse Arts Guild was in it’s usual spot for Art on the Fence! This is the day when the public chooses their favorite of the paintings and photography or anything which will hang on the fence! The People’s Choice for 2013 was a watercolor by Ruth Genco titled “Last Tap”. There were also Ribbon prizes in First, Second and Third categories. Pat Sanders was again the judge and the critique artist. We look forward each year to Pat’s expertise in the judging and especially the critiquing of the art.
The 50-50 Raffle to benefit the Scholarship Fund was in full swing with Sydney Stevens and her niece, Alyssa, explaining the Scholarship program of the Wooden Horse Arts Guild.
Kudos to The Jay Focus group. Hardworking and able to “pull it together". Thanks so much! Read more about this great group at Welcome to Jay, Vermont.

An Evening with Watercolor Arts and the Marimba music of Ruth Genco

On the evening of July 27, 2013, the Rand Memorial Library “annex” became a Mini Gallery and Music Room! The Watercolors of the artists of the Wooden Horse Arts Guild and the very beautiful Marimba music of Ruth Genco filled the room with music and art. Here is a little history of Ruth’s marimba:

This particular marimba is about 75 years old. The keys are of rosewood (all from the same tree). It is a tropical instrument and plays and sounds best in the warm, humid weather. Marimbas of this type were used during the 40’s and 50’s as background music for popular songs. They are rarely seen today. Ruth began playing the marimba at age 10 and studied at the Wurlitzer Conservatory in Philadelphia. She saved her money and bought this instrument when she was 12. It is her musical treasure.

The watercolorists taking part in this event were Mary Brenner, Phyllis Hammond, Georgia Higley, Ruth Genco, Pat Lipinski & Fred Wilson.
