Paula Holland
Painter
Artist Biography:
Paula Holland
As an artist, I am fascinated by the interplay of line, color and form that together create a sense of motion in what is by its nature a stationary medium. I'm attracted also by tension created by impasto areas juxtaposed with the flatness of the surface and the illusion of depth created by form and color. I seek to evoke an emotional response and reflection in the onlooker: a sense of joy and wonder.

Favorite Quotes:
"Art is a necessity, beauty we must have in the world."
- Charles W. Hawthorne, Hawthorne on Painting

I was born in New York, raised there and took most of my art training there (the Art Students League; Pratt Institute; the New York Academy of Art). Overseas, I had a year of study while in Zurich at the Freie Kunstschule (the Unaffiliated Art School). In the fall of 2008, feeling the weight of overstimulation, constant noise and stress, I accepted an offer from dear friends to move to the country. I have not looked back. I feel quite at home with the sound of wind, rain and birdsong, the beating of my own heart and the deep silence that creativity makes in my head. I expect all my prickly city edges to be nicely rounded off in due time.

My art is in collections from New York to New Mexico to Japan and throughout Europe.

I have shown you on this page a variety of my favorite paintings and subjects. I hope you will look at my website where each section of my work is described in detail.
