Photo Fun Challenge Contest 2016-17

The Photo Fun Young Photographers have completed a contest during 2016 -2017 in which they received Monthly Challenges from the Photo Fun Committee. Twenty Five young photographers from 24 towns around Vermont submitted approximately 340 images. They were allowed up to three images per challenge per month. Twenty three of the Young photographers were home-schooled – Grades 5 thru 8 and 9 thru 12. The Vermont children were also invited to attend a free seminar to help better understand photography, the use of the camera, composition, lighting, naming the photo and more.

This year we were pleased to be offered the Samuel Read Hall House on the wonderful grounds of the Old Stone House Museum for our Seminar Study. The instructor, Robin Leavitt, of Casco, Maine and daughter of Camilla Mead, past-president and one of the founding members of the Wooden Horse Arts Guild, welcomed the young people from 24 towns in Vermont. Robin focuses on Basic photography skills, composition and lighting and the processes needed to become better photographers…..not just “point and shoot” .

Robin was assisted by WHAG intern, Erica Bogar (now at Plymouth State College) and Robert Boskind, local photographer. Mark Linton, Newport photographer, took the students, their parents and instructors on a photography tour focusing specifically on the Old Stone House. Mark is a well - known architectural and equine photographer and Wooden Horse Arts Guild supporter.

Seminars like this make sure that youth participants have access to further develop their interest in the arts. Learning photographing techniques as well as critiquing, editing and matting their work are important!

We thank the generosity of the Old Stone House Museum of the Orleans County Historical Society and the Community National Bank, Derby, VT. For making the 5th Annual Photo Fun Contest for Young Vermont Photographers a success.

Photo Fun 2015 Judges:

Robin Mead Leavitt

Robin can be described as lively, happy, and ready to meet any she says, "As long as it involves a camera!" Winters are spent at the ski areas in New England shooting Alpine racing and Freestyle Competitions – she is an accomplished skier. Summers will see Robin taking pictures of Nature, Families, Weddings and Soccer. She treats her photography as an ART and that's the reason she was chosen as Seminar instructor for PHOTO FUN. She loves working with the kids and teaching them to "SEE" and "FRAME" before they "SHOOT".

Carol Savage

Carol brings 27 years of experience to the photography field after graduating from Hallmark Institute of Photography. Carol is experienced and well-known for her portraiture, especially in her years at Sunday River, Bethel, Maine. Carol has a Nikon as her camera of choice and "I can't imagine doing anything else! If a camera isn't in my hands, I'm framing up an image in my mind.

Randi Baird

Randi is a wedding and editorial photographer based on Martha's Vineyard. She is schooled in Fine Art Photography and brings a unique perspective to the craft of photography, including live filming. She has been shooting professionally for more than 20 years and has traveled the world fulfilling assignments for clients and documenting life in action.

Rob Boskind

"I am inspired every time I go outside by the nature and wildlife surrounding me in Vermont. This means that there is usually a camera instead of a cup sitting in the cup-holder of my car." Rob teaches Photography at the North Country Career Center Adult Education in Newport,VT.

Frank (Bud) Varkala

Bud has had many artistic pursuits in life, including painting, lapidary, woodworking, and stained glass, but photography is his passion.  He photographs wedding and special event photography with a slightly different style. "Photography is "visual commentary" through which I hope to inspire viewers to appreciate the beauty of the simplest things in a more personal way – all to enrich our experience."

Patricia Sanders
Visual Arts Instructor - North Country Union High School

Patricia Sanders teaches Fine Art at North Country Union High School in Newport, VT. She has guided so many students through their years of searching for themselves through the arts. As one graduate said, "I would not be who I am today or have the love of my art except for Ms. Sanders. She is the BEST!" Pat is also the best when critiquing the arts! We are happy to have her as a member of the WHAG Guild.
